Oral hygiene

Oral hygiene refers to keeping your teeth and mouth clean. Looking after your dental hygiene is an important part of your overall health. That’s why it’s so important to develop healthy oral hygiene habits from an early age.

Making regular appointments for a professional clean is an important part of preventing dental disease and decay. It also enables us to detect and treat dental problems in the early stages, before they worsen and require more invasive treatment.

Management of Gum Disease

The treatment of gum disease depends on the severity of the infection. If you seek immediate treatment, it’s possible for a gum infection to be treated with a deep clean. You might be prescribed antimicrobial or antibiotic medication to further reduce bacteria in your mouth.

Gum disease can be prevented by establishing good oral hygiene habits, and scheduling regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning every six months.

Scaling and cleaning

By going for a deep clean every six months, you can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease and other dental problems. Dental scaling forms part of this deep clean process.

Scaling is when a dentist scrapes plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) off your teeth, both above and below the gum line. This ensures that each tooth is cleaned to the bottom of the pocket.

Fissure sealants

A fissure sealant is a protective coating that is applied to the biting surfaces of your back teeth – your molars and premolars. It protects the fissures (tiny dents and grooves) in your teeth from food or bacteria that could enter and cause tooth decay. It is a quick and painless procedure that provides long-lasting protection.

Preventive dentistry is importance because by maintaining your dental health and monitoring your oral hygiene, your risk of disease is greatly reduced.
